My Tech Guys Mailbag

We often get questions sent to support@mytechguys.ca regarding a whole range of topics. In this new feature, we will be sharing some of these questions and our responses.

Is there currently any virus threats for Apple computers? You have looked after my desktop Mac for several years now and I recently bought a 13″ Apple MacAir. Do you advise your clients about risks, as part of your service or am I on my own when it comes to learning about potential threats? If this is “buyer beware” thing, what steps should I take to keep the most current protection(s) on my machines?

Can you also give me your thoughts on the best webinar services available?

Thanks, Alan

Virus Threats

Starting here I would recommend against installing an antivirus program. Mac’s do indeed get viruses but they tend to be of the malware variety. This means they mascarade as a program that is useful that slows down your PC and offers other paid programs (also malware) to help. The Antivirus we use for Mac’s is Sophos antivirus, however, the program is big and bulky and can drastically slow down your computer if you always have it running. We use this tool to clean an already infected computer.

I would suggest installing an extension into your browsers called “Adblock plus”. This will stop you seeing adverts online and drastically reduce the chances of you installing malware on your Mac. It’s not foolproof but it definitely helps the cause.

First off I would not be doing my job if I didn’t mention we do both in store and in-home lessons. for $50 we can either have you in the store for a 1on1 consultation and go over most of what you are looking to know or remote into your computer, giving instruction over the phone.

In terms of online places to learn, Youtube is a good place to start, with a tonne of content. I tried searching “Mac tutorial” and David Cox was high in the search results and after looking over his channel, his lessons seem to be of good quality. Here is a pretty thorough video walkthrough of the Sierra operating system. If you are looking to drill down to a specific topic you would have to refine your search terms but checking out all the videos made by David is a good start and as always we are happy to jump in and book a lesson to review any list of topics you would like covered.

Lastly, we do a group lesson series called Tech Talks. For a full list of our lessons check out the page on our website and give us a call on 250-890-1065 to sign up.
