My Tech Guys Mailbag

We often get questions sent to support@mytechguys.ca regarding a whole range of topics. In this new feature, we will be sharing some of these questions and our responses.

Hi, My Tech Guys!

Thank you so much for the recent home visit to get my bookmarks sorted on my new Mac. I am having trouble with my current battery life on my iPhone. It used to last much longer when I first purchased it.  I do not want to put much money into the iPhone but is there anything else I can do to improve battery life?

Good morning,

Background App refresh
Spaceholder
Starting here I would recommend turning off a service called background app refresh. Background refresh is part of what allows any app for iPhone or iPad to appear to be multitasking all the time. The truth is, they’re really multitasking “just in time” by updating in the background whenever they have the opportunity — or right before they figure you’ll be launching them. To turn this feature off head to your settings menu, select general then click background app refresh, making sure the top setting is set to off!

In spite of how efficient Apple has tried to make background refresh, some apps still manage to consume a ton of power and resources. Yes, looking at Facebook so hard… Luckily, if either your battery life or your data limit is a concern, you can turn off background refresh altogether — or just for those apps, you don’t consider that important.

Closing your apps

Make sure that once a day you are closing the apps that you have opened on the iPhone. Despite being a regular feature, many people do not know you can double click the home button to see a list of all open applications. Then simply swish them up or down to clear them and close them down. Similar to Background app refresh, these apps use battery life in the background.

Lastly, turn down brightness from your menu, turning off bluetooth, and even turning off wifi if you are not currently using it, but beware accidentally leaving it off and getting charged for data. We are also happy to do the battery replacement. We are an Apple warranty center and can get parts for Apple units in and out of warranty. Also, there is an apple recall going on now.  Any other questions please get in touch again!
